French A2 Intermediate Film Study

This course is for students who have at least 2 years of study and who can express themselves in French. Students will watch the full film “Promise at Dawn”, or “La promesse de l'aube”, over the four weeks in class. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to discuss this French film in light of its cultural context, apply a critical interpretation of the film with reference to secondary literature, analyse and understand the narratives, techniques and theme of the film with the aim to improve listening, speaking, reading and comprehension skills. This film is by Eric Barbier, with Charlotte Gainsbourg (César award for best actress 2018) and Pierre Niney. It is an adaptation of Romain Gary’s epic memoir.

About the film:
A tumultuous story that twists and turns across a difficult childhood in Poland with an eccentric mother, a sun-drenched adolescence in Nice, and piloting during world war two.
