Interior Design - Intermediate

Course Outline

This interior design course is for anyone who has a basic theoretical knowledge of colour and design and wishes to develop their skills and knowledge and apply it to their home. It is helpful if you have already completed “Interior Design- The Basics” 8 week course. This is not an essential requirement, as we will continually refer and refresh our understanding of the Principles & Basics of Colour Theory.

We will study the application of colour schemes and colour contrasts through simple paint exercises. We will develop colour palettes, apply colour principles and learn more about tonal values, additive and subtractive colours. Working with the colour wheel and through simple paint exercises, you will improve your application of colour schemes and an understanding of how colours are formed and how light affects colour.

We will then adapt your colour knowledge and couple it with the Elements and Principles of Design including such factors as form, texture, size and balance. Then, in turn, we will then adapt to your interior space.

This course is very practical and hands on, and will help build your confidence in the use of colour and design choices for your home environment.

About the Tutor

Fiona Barry studied Art, Design and Art History at Epsom School of Art and Design, UK and then moved to Australia to work in the corporate sector and utilised her Marketing and PR qualifications gained from the College of Distributive Trades in London and University of NSW, Sydney.
Fiona always maintained her keen interest in colour, design and finalised her Diploma in Interior Design. Additionally, she graduated from the International School of Colour & Design with a Certificate IV in Colour and Design and a Diploma in Surface Design. She was awarded ‘The Award for Excellence’ in both courses.
Throughout her business career she never lost touch with her passion for art and design – specifically interior design. She opened her own Interior Design consultancy in 2014 and has since worked on numerous residential design assignments in Australia and the UK, helping solve colour and design issues for both new builds and existing residences. Commercially, she has also redesigned the interior of a Sydney based restaurant, a public lobby in a large residential block and two patient waiting rooms.
Although not her primary role, Fiona gets enormous fulfillment in watching her students progress and gain confidence when dealing with their own homes, through sharing her skill with others in a classroom training capacity
