Japanese: Beginners Stage 1

This course is a fun language and culture course suitable for beginners. The emphasis is on developing speaking competence in relevant situations such as dining out and making purchases. Students will learn not only what to say but why, gaining an understanding of Japanese social norms such as polite body language and gift giving. Interesting superstitions will be introduced such as why your hotel may not have a 4th floor or why your futon bed faces a certain direction.

Course Outline

Students will learn to: • Pronounce Japanese places and common items correctly • Use simple phrases to communicate with Japanese locals in Sydney and abroad • Understand aspects of Japanese social norms such as polite body language and gift giving • Recognise the influence of Shintoism and Buddhism on Japanese customs and society

What to Bring

• Notebook and pen.
• Textbook will be discussed at the first session.

About the tutor

Liberty is a trained secondary teacher with a BA (Japanese), Dip. Ed (secondary) and currently studying for a Masters degree (Master of education in curriculum and pedagogy, Macquarie University). She has lived in Japan for 4 years after graduating and has taken school groups to Japan many times. She also has experience teaching short courses both in Australia and Japan.
