Painting in Watercolour : Beginners Level 3 and beyond

This advanced beginners ‘Stage 3’ class is perfect if you have taken the Stage 1 & 2 Beginners series with Jenny already or if you already know the basic techniques and basic application of watercolour. (Not suitable for real beginners) Students joining this class should already know about washes, mixing, colour, equipment, etc. We will build on your knowledge, add to your techniques and hone your skills to get you confidently painting. Each lesson, your tutor will demonstrate a new technique and students can develop their ability with painting exercises and finished artworks. We use artist quality equipment for optimal results. Launching into some ‘real’ artwork we’re going to look at trees, landscapes, negative painting, pen and wash and more. You’ll create some fabulous paintings and learn important tips and tricks to add to your toolkit. If you have taken the Stage 1 & 2 Beginner’s series with Jenny already, you have most of your equipment – returnees please see the couple of extra things you will require. New students please see the equipment list provided below. Any questions please contact the tutor. Arches paper (torn before class into quarters), and a leaning board and block are compulsory and artist quality paint strongly recommended.

COUSE MATERIALS FOR STAGE 3 CLASS (INCLUDES Stg 1 & 2 materials)
Students provide their own materials. Please try to buy the brands/types listed as, while artist quality equipment is more expensive than student quality counterparts, it produces much better paintings and is more economical in the long run.
Paint Colours: either tubes of Art Spectrum, Winsor& Newton, Daniel Smith or Schmincke brands.
Raw Sienna (Jenny prefers W&N brand or the Light hue in Art Spectrum)
Burnt Sienna (as above)
Permanent Rose
Cobalt Blue
French Ultramarine Blue
Aureolin Yellow or Winsor Lemon
Optional: Phthalo Blue
Permanent/New Gamboge
Permanent Alizarin Crimson
Paint brush: Either a Raphael 803 size 1 round squirrel mop (nicely pointed) or a size 6 or 7 Nevskaya Palitra round pointed squirrel mop (FROM Larry Post Curl Curl)
Paper: 2 full sheets Arches 300gsm rough paper. (tear or cut into quarters before class).
(optional) 1 pad of cheap watercolour paper.
Drawing paper/book

Other Items
• 1 waterproof/permanent black or sepia fineliner pen or ink pen, no less than .5mm diameter

  • 1 painting board (required) – corflute / plywood / Masonite / Perspex or similar approximately 50cm x 40cm.

• 1 roll of regular cream coloured masking tape approx. 2cm wide.
• 1 4B Pencil
• 1 Clean white eraser OR a grey kneadable rubber
• 1 Pen and note paper if desired to take notes.
• PALETTE: 2 x dinner sized white china plates or the 16 well Art Spectrum Colour Keeper or Neef 2 wells in lid palette. (as long as it has plenty of mixing space).
• 1 large plastic water container – a white 2lt ice-cream container is ideal. (NO glass please)
• 1 old towelling hand towel or face washer (this will be getting dirty).
• A block of wood approx. 12-15cm x 5cm (2x4") and approx. 20cm long to put under paint board so it slants.. See recommended suppliers below for discount art supplies!

Don’t worry if you’re unsure or cannot source all of these items. Jenny will discuss equipment in the first lesson, and show examples, eg palettes. Just bring what you have! See recommended supplier below for discount art supplies!
