Slow stitching: The Basics of Embroidery

In this class you will learn the basic stitches and techniques used in hand embroidery. This class is an introduction to playing and learning to ‘draw’ with thread.
BYO fabric,small embroidery hoop ( if you have one) thread and needles or a full kit is available for purchase on the day ( $20 payable to tutor). Any stable fabric like cotton, denim, linen, velvet, suiting wool is suitable to work on – you can even bring a favourite garment that you wish to add some embroidery to. ( Avoid fabric with stretch as this is quite hard to learn on). Students will work on their own freeform ‘sampler’ or use some of the images that will be provided on the day, for inspiration.

What to Bring

  • Selection of embroidery threads
  • Needles
  • Fabric or item to work on – should be a medium weight woven, non stretch fabric with an even weave. Cotton, linen, calico, broadcloth, wool suiting (no stretch)
  • Tailors pencil or chalk
  • Notepad and pen
  • Pair of Scissors

Embroidery kits that include needles, embroidery thread and embroidery hoop will be available on the day for $20 (payable in cash on the day) to order a kit email the trainer Marianne ( and she will bring it to the course.
