The Mindful Body: A Holistic Approach to Weight Loss

The World Health Organisation’s definition of Health is “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. There are over 44 million posts on social media under the #fitspo, hoping to inspire people to a life of fitness. Are these messages actually healthy? This course looks at how many of these posts actually compromise our physical, mental and social health. It is comprised of two weeks of looking at our sense of self and two weeks of nutrition education and how to critically examine social media posts so that we have a better understanding of which healthy messages to listen to.

This course covers the following topics:

Weeks 1 and 2 - Mental Health

• Perception of Self
• Inside me Outside me
• What influences our perception of Self
• Self Image V Body Image
• How our perception of self can influence our diet and exercise behaviours
• Media influences (fitspo messages) on our perception of self
• What are we listening to?
• Brief outline explaining eating disorders

Weeks 3 and 4 – Nutrition

• Food Groups and why we need them all
• Balanced diet – Australian dietary guidelines
• Consequences of eliminating food groups
• Where are you getting your information from? What dietary trends are currently being promoted? What is clean eating anyway?
