Smart & Skilled Subsidised Training
What is Smart & Skilled?
Smart and Skilled is a reform of the NSW vocational education and training system. Under Smart and Skilled the NSW Government contributes to the cost of an approved course with the eligible student paying the balance.
From 1 January 2015, Smart and Skilled provides eligible students with:
- An entitlement to government-subsidised training up to and including Certificate III
- Government funding for higher-level courses (Certificate IV and above) in targeted priority areas.
To be eligible for Smart & Skilled you must be:
- An Australian Citizen, New Zealand Citizen, permanent resident or humanitarian visa holder
- Aged 15 years or older
- Not at school
- Living or working in NSW.

Note: the number of places offered is subject to funding availability.
Fees apply for your selected program. The fee amount you pay and the government contribution depends upon your eligibility. The courses are subsidised for all eligible participants with a further concession rate available for those in receipt of some Commonwealth benefits. The schedule of fees can be accessed here
If you are a Centrelink recipient we will need documentation from you which will assist us in calculating your Fee or your eligibility for fee exemption.
If you apply for Recognition of Prior Learning or Credit Transfer the qualification price will be adjusted and a new student fee will be determined.
Fee free scholarships are available for qualifications up to and including Certificate IV level for 15-30 year olds who are in receipt of a Commonwealth Benefit or a dependant of a Commonwealth Benefit recipient.
• Fee exemption applies for Aborigines and those in receipt of Disability Pension.
• A NSW Apprentice on a Newstart Allowance is not eligible for a concession fee
• A NSW New Entrant Trainee on a Newstart Allowance is not eligible for a concession fee.
• The Carer Payment is a specific benefit paid by the Commonwealth; this category does not include the Carer Allowance or Carer Adjustment Payment.

Fee Free Scholarships
Limited fee free scholarships in Smart & Skilled subsidised qualifications are available for those 15-30 years of age in receipt of a Commonwealth Benefit or a dependant of a Commonwealth Benefit recipient (benefits listed above) and who meet the general Smart & Skilled eligibility criteria.
A majority of the qualifications from Certificate III level and higher, listed above, can be studied through a traineeship pathway. The administration fee for new entrant traineeships has been capped at $1000 with effect from 1 January 2016. Unique Student Identifier
From 1 January 2015 it is a requirement of the Federal Government that all students undertaking nationally recognised training will need to obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This involves an easy online application. See USI Fact Sheet for information on how to apply for a USI or see here for additional information.
